Pendulum effect (1D)
by Bob Loeffler and claude.ai
First slider (speed) is for the speed of the pendulum LED going back and forth. (0 = random speed)
Second slider (X offset) is for where the center of the pendulum will be. In the middle means the center of the pendulum will be in the middle of the LED strip. Moving the slider left will move the pendulum to the left, etc. (0 = random X offset)
Third slider (blur) is for how much of a trail the pendulum will leave.
Fourth slider (pause/delay) is for how long the effect will pause after the pendulum movement stops and before restarting the movement.
Fifth slider (gravity) is for how much the pendulum movement will be affected due to gravity. (0 = random gravity)
Checkbox1 will select the LED color based on it's position on the strip.
Checkbox2 will make the pendulum swing forever (a perpetual pendulum).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added a Pendulum effect that swings across the LED strip, with controls for speed, offset, blur, pause, gravity, color, continuous motion, and pendulum size.
In non-continuous mode, swings gradually lose amplitude and pause when they become small enough, then restart after the configured delay. Continuous mode keeps the pendulum moving.
If the strip is too short for the larger pendulum, the effect uses a smaller size.
The user effects module adds and registers a Pendulum effect when 1D particle-system support is enabled. The effect animates a particle with configurable motion and uses a static fallback for short segments or particle-system initialization failures.

Summary
Pendulum motion and registration usermods/user_fx/user_fx.cpp
The module conditionally includes particle-system support and registers the Pendulum effect when 1D particle-system support is enabled. The effect configures speed, offset, blur, delay, gravity, color, and size. Non-perpetual swings lose amplitude and pause; perpetual swings continue without amplitude decay or pauses. The effect uses the short size when a segment cannot fit the large pendulum. Short segments and initialization failures use the static effect.
Opposite-direction settings changes can leave the effect using old motion parameters in perpetual mode; this is a narrow but real behavior gap.

Use a collision-free settings key.
The settings sum can remain unchanged when one pendulum setting increases while another decreases by the same amount. JSON updates write these settings directly and do not reset the segment runtime. In perpetual mode, pd->phase does not reach PHASE_STOPPED, so the effect can keep its previous swing speed and offset.
Compare each setting separately or store a collision-free key.
I've tested all of the settings and they are working as intended.
looks good in general, I did not check what happens if you set usedParticles to zero. Also I woud not call it "PS" as it does not use the particle system like other PS effects do except to render a single particle correct?
as you are already using the PS rendering, why not also enable larger dot renderings?

I would have thought that a single pixel moving by a sine wave would be a lot simpler, especially when special functions like beatsin are already availeable. But hey, why not.
Edit: some nitpick: gravity is not "damping" a pendulum (aka harmonic oscillator) - the damping is due to friction when moving through air, or trough honey or throught whatever you like. Gravity is the force that keeps a pendulum swinging.

Yeah, that would've been simpler, but I didn't think of that. LOL I wanted to play with the PS code a few months ago and I thought of this pendulum idea, so I started making it using PS.

Ok, I just removed the damping references. Now it's just gravity.

For segLen 2 or 3, cutoff is 0. With intensity 255, map(255, 1, 255, 0, segLen) returns segLen. The particle then starts at x = segLen * PS_P_RADIUS_1D, outside the valid pixel range. The single-pixel renderer converts this to pixel segLen and skips it, so the pendulum disappears at that endpoint.

1677-1678: Duplicate of the existing settings-checksum concern.
settingssum is not injective. Increasing SEGMENT.speed by one and decreasing SEGMENT.intensity by one leaves the value unchanged. In perpetual mode, the effect does not reach PHASE_STOPPED, so the new speed or offset can remain unapplied indefinitely. Compare the initialization inputs individually or store an exact key. This concern was already raised in the PR discussion. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Correct, it's just rending a single particle. Ok, I just removed PS from it.
Just FYI: the whole point of the PS is that it provides a simple and fast physics engine but of course it can be used to just do the rendering which also has some nice advantages - like taking care of overflows, colors, blur etc.
as you are already using the PS rendering, why not also enable larger dot renderings?
I don't have any sliders available to set the particle size.
In some PS FX I used a checkmark and called it "XL" to render particles as large dots

Ok, I found it in PS Springy, so I put it in my latest version which I'm pushing soon. Thx for the idea!

Reserve the rendered XL radius before mapping the swing.
XL mode reserves three pixels, but particle size 120 renders to a radius of approximately 4.8 pixels. On a 20-pixel segment, the leftmost mapped center is 5; the calculated amplitude is 2, so the particle reaches center 3 and its left side is clipped. On segments of 4–8 pixels, the same clearance calculation leaves zero amplitude for every mapped center. Use a clearance derived from the rendered size. If the segment cannot fit that clearance and a nonzero swing, use the static fallback or a smaller particle. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

@BobLoeffler68 The short-segment fallback is fixed, but XL clearance remains incomplete in commit 42ad4237.
LARGE_RADIUS_PX still reserves 3 pixels at Line 1662. The renderer computes a radius of (120 + 32 + 1) / 32 ≈ 4.78 pixels in wled00/FXparticleSystem.cpp. On a 20-pixel segment, the swing can still reach center 3 and clip the particle.
Please derive LARGE_RADIUS_PX from the rendered size, rounding up to 5 pixels. The existing cutoff and fallback checks can then use that clearance.
This assessment is based on source inspection, not a hardware test.

Clear retained segment data when particle initialization fails.
When the segment-data limit rejects initParticleSystem1D(...), the fallback returns while SEGENV.data can still point to a smaller buffer. The next call passes the non-null pointer check and dereferences storage that was never constructed as ParticleSystem1D. Clear that buffer before returning to keep the later fallback safe.
